The prize was presented last week to a group of children from the Aberffraw primary school who won first prize of £200 in a nationwide "Vanishing Wildlife" competition, sponsored by the Lyons - Tetley group. Britain was divided into regions; with a specific animal to be studied in each.. CHOICE The children of Aberffraw, were given the choice of the otter or the red squirrel and chose the squirrel. About 30 children up to the ageof 11, including two six-year-old Infants, look-part. They made several trips to the woods and were lucky enough to.catch a glimpsesof one of these creatures. They made ail exhaustive study of the squirrel, using paintings, models and creative writing to describe their findings.
REMARKABLE Aberffraw was one of 300 schools to enter the competition. "It's a remarkable achievement by these children" said Mr Beatty. "It shows that the small schools are every bit as good as the bigger ones". Lyons also gave £3,000 to the Wildlife Fund. "We hope to do more of this sort of thing in the future, to encourage children to learn about their environment and appreciate the need for preserving it", said Mr Beatty. |
